YouTube browsing with a remote
Meedtube+ is an independent client based on SmartTube code, with its own branding, website, phone-assisted setup and separate mobile build. It includes community sponsor skipping, Shorts preferences and player settings.
SmartTube is a separate upstream project for Android TV and TV boxes. Evaluate its current documentation and release channel directly. Meedtube+ version numbers and signing keys do not describe SmartTube releases. Neither project is the official YouTube app.
Local files and your own media
A local media player such as VLC for Android serves a different purpose: its published features focus on media files and network streams. Choose according to the file and stream types you need. Meedtube+ is not presented here as a replacement for a general-purpose local media library.
A useful comparison checklist
- Content: YouTube browsing, local files or a separate provider?
- Device: Android TV, Google TV, Android-based Fire OS or a non-Android system? These APKs cannot install directly on Vega OS, Tizen or webOS.
- Remote: Can you see focus from the couch and reach quality, captions and Back?
- Updates: Is the signing identity clear, and can you retain preferences?
- Evidence: Are compatibility claims backed by an identified model and OS, or still pending?
- Cost: Is the app free, and what service or content restrictions still apply?
Meedtube+ evidence and limits
Published APKs include checksums and release notes. Automated recovery tests passed for TV 1.2.3 and Mobile 1.19.5. Physical Fire OS validation and playback of the reported failing video remain pending. This is a selection guide, not a benchmark or a claim of superiority.
